Frequently Asked Questions

If you are looking for a new job or thinking about making a career transition you are sure to have lots of questions. Here are some frequently asked questions that we receive here at Executive People.

Q. I've received a job offer but I'm waiting to hear back from an other employer about a role which I like more. What should I do?
A. Firstly, you need to find out if your preferred employer has completed their selection process. Call the appropriate contact person and politely ask if they have made a decision. If they have they probably know if you are going to be offered the position. Explain your situation and ask if they can informally provide a response. If you receive a positive answer it would be wise not to accept your first offer.

If the preferred employer has not completed the selection process you need to ask yourself some questions:

  • Can you afford the risk of rejecting the first offer and not getting your preferred one?
  • How confident are you of getting your preferred role?
  • What are your chances of success?
  • Did you interview well?
  • Do you know the other candidates under consideration?

Q. What should I do when I discover that I do not like my present job after working there for a few weeks?
A. Do not resign immediately. Change is sometimes difficult to manage. Give yourself more time (5-6 months) to understand your work and appreciate the positive aspects. Get to know your work colleagues better and find ways to work effectively together.

Q. How do I go about changing careers?
A. A career change can be an exciting prospect and it is not uncommon for the average job-seeker to make 4-5 career changes during their working life. Like any major life change, a career transition should be taken carefully and slowly by following a well laid plan.

1. Examine your likes and dislikes: understand your passion.

2. Research: Uncover careers that consist of things you like doing.

3. Transfer your skills: don't discard all of your experience, it's likely you have key skills (eg leadership, communication) that will make the move with you.

4. Training: you may need additional education. Think carefully and take your time before committing to expensive courses.

5. Networking: start meeting people in your new field, join a professional body, go to a conference, chat online.

6. Gain experience: volunteer or gain part-time work in your new career whilst making your transition.

7. Find a mentor: have someone to offer support and advice.

8. Look around you: if you hate your job but love your employer investigate if you can switch careers without leaving.

9. CV writing and interview skills: brush up on your key job search skills.

10. Have an open mind: as you begin to make your career change, you're going to need to be flexible about things such as salary and location.
