Streamlining your CV
One of the hardest tasks you face when you decide to look for a new job is selling yourself on paper. Your CV is a powerful tool. Whilst there is no set formula for a successful CV there are guidelines for professionalism which can make the difference between securing an interview and remaining on the reject pile.
- Tailor your CV to the position for which you are applying.
- List basic contact information - name, address, telephone numbers, email address.
- Include an effective summary of yourself on the first page promoting your key skills.* List your qualifications and education.
- List your experience in chronological order. Put your most recent position first and do not leave gaps in your CV. If you had time off, explain why.
- Use active language (e.g. managed, created, implemented etc) and bullet points.
- Demonstrate your ability by including facts such as "Increased sales by 15% in first quarter", "Managed a division of 50 people" or "Implemented a customer relationship management system".* Include referees and contact details.
- Keep your CV to 3-5 pages.
- Spell check! First impressions last.
- Submit your CV electronically, in a common program (e.g. MS Word)
